Walmart Enforces Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products
As a notable development, Walmart has begun enforcing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can buy during a single visit. This policy was activated starting November 5th, based on an internal announcement shared with employees.
Tackling Reseller Problems
While not officially confirmed by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer buying an enormous quantity of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video received significant criticism for allowing the large-scale transaction to proceed.
Policy Details and Potential Loopholes
The updated guideline specifies that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card boxes or packs per store visit. However, the language has sparked debate due to its vagueness. What exactly qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and if someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Moreover, since the limit is based on individual trips, theoretically an eager reseller could make multiple trips—buying five items each time—to gather significant stocks throughout the day.
The Reseller Crisis
To most players, this approach might seem over the top, yet for resellers, it's standard practice. Over the past few seasons, scalpers have greatly contributed to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, spurred by the TCG's growing fame.
Some resellers aim to sell unopened products at a markup, while others hunt for valuable pulls that can fetch sky-high values. For instance, a specific Mega Evolution card from the latest set has been listed at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.
Looking Ahead
The new rule coincides with the approaching launch of the latest Pokémon expansion, coming on November 14th. Pre-release sales indicate premium cards like the Charizard mega evolution listed for around fifteen hundred dollars, emphasizing the persistent interest and likely reseller attention.
Hopefully, Walmart's restrictions will curb bulk purchases and improve availability for genuine collectors and everyday enthusiasts as well.
